Parade of Historic Homes - Manville Heights & River Heights Neighborhoods

Date:               Sunday May 28, 2017 12pm-4pm

Location:        Manville Heights & River Heights Neighborhoods

 

Homes on the tour include Homes designed by Henry Fisk such as 243 Hutchinson, 612 Park Road, 7 Longview Knoll NE, and 8 Highview Knoll NE. Other homes include 160 Oakridge Avenue, the newly National Register listed home at 715 Park Road, and the National Register Listed Ned Ashton House at 820 Park Road.

Activities:        Friends of Historic Preservation will host the annual Parade of Historic Homes in Manville Heights and River Heights Neighborhood

Admission:       $10 FHP Members; $15 Nonmembers

Tickets Available: Online, at the Salvage Barn, at any of the homes of the parade (map)

 

Houser-Metzger Garage Sale

Dates:              Friday, June 16 10am-4pm, Saturday, June 17, 10am-5pm, Sunday, June 18, 10am-4pm

Location:        Garage and Backyard (alley side) of the Houser-Metzger House, 623 College Street, Iowa City

 

Help support the rehabilitation of the Houser-Metzger House and walk away with a deal! The National Register eligible house was relocated to the College Green Historic District after being rescued from demolition at it previous location on Iowa Ave.   FHP is in the final push to get the house rehabilitated as a single family home, but funds are in need.  If you would like to donate materials for the garage sale.  Please drop them off at the Salvage Barn, 2401 Scott Blvd SE Tuesday-Saturday 9am-5pm.  For larger materials in need of transport please call the Salvage Barn at 319.351.1875 to arrange a pick-up time. Donations to Friends of Historic Preservation are tax deductible and you will be provided with a donation invoice.

Passive Floor Restoration

Date:               Saturday, May 6, 2017 8am-5pm

Location:        Houser-Metzger House, 623 College Street, Iowa City

The old growth wood in our historic floors is a precious natural resource and most floors can only be drum sanded three times before they are at the end of their life. This class will teach how to patch, remove old finish, remove water and pet stains, and apply a finish all without aggressively sanding.  This class will be taught by Terry Philips of TK Enterprises and Alicia Trimble of FHP.  Lunch will be provided. $50 Member, $75 Non-Member.

 

Craft Your Environment

Date:               Sunday, April 23, 2017 10am-3pm

Location:        East Side Recycling Center, 2401 Scott Blvd, SE Iowa City, IA

Craft Your Environment will showcase the creations of artists and crafters whose work aligns with the Salvage Barn’s mission of keeping valuable materials out of the landfill. Scheduled the Sunday after Earth Day, this event will take place at the East Side Recycling Center (ESRC). In addition to supporting creative reuse, the fair will present free and interactive workshops, various kids activities, and local food.

Interior Painting Workshop

Date:               Saturday, March 11th, 2017 1pm-5pm

Location:        Houser-Metzger House, 623 College Street, Iowa City

With 40 years of experience in the painting field, Terry Philips is the right person to teach you how to paint the interior of your home. The class will teach how to repair and prepare plaster walls for paint and the best techniques to achieve a professional looking paint job without paying for a professional. $20 Member, $30 Non-Member

 

Window Workshop

Date:               Saturday, January 28th, 2017, 9am-6pm

Location:        Houser-Metzger House, 623 College Street, Iowa City

Taught by Larry Johnson of Fresh Air Window Works, this will be an intense, hands-on opportunity. The class will teach sash removal, paint and glass removal, wood repair, glazing techniques, weather stripping, and sash installation with new sash cords. $75 Member, $100 Non-Member

 

Salvaged Window Barn Quilt Class

Date:               Saturday, October 29, 2016, 11am - 2pm

Location:        East Side Educational Center, 2401 Scott Blvd. SE (kitty-corner from the Salvage Barn)

Activities :      This is a new exciting event to turns salvaged materials into art!  FHP is hosting a NEW Barns & Brews event on Saturday, October 29th  from 11:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m at the East Side Recycing Center. Barns & Brews will be offering a fun class where attendees will paint their own customized 2’ x 2’ barn quilt on a salvaged single pane glass window.  And they look awesome!

 

Exterior Painting Workshop

Date:               Saturday, October 22, 2016, 10am-5pm

Location:        Houser-Metzger House, 623 College Street, Iowa City

Activities :      Join Terry Philips of TK Enterprises as he teaches how to achieve a 15-20 year paint job. The hands-on workshop will teach how to safely remove lead paint,, prepare wood surfaces, fix damaged lap, understand moisture issues, prime, and paint exterior wood surfaces. $45 Member, $55 Non-Member

 

Salvages

All volunteers welcome!

Activities:        We have more salvages in the next two and a half months than we generally have in any given year! Please wear closed toed shoes and clothes you don't mind getting dirty. We will have safety glasses, gloves, and earplugs available. And make sure to bring your shades! Checkout our Facebook page or call for more information

 

Parade of Historic Homes - Kirkwood and Summit Street Neighborhoods

Date:                Sunday, May 29, 2016 1:00PM — 5:00PM

Location:         In and around Kirkwood and Summit Streets  (map coming soon)

Activities:        Friends of Historic Preservation will host the annual Parade of Historic Homes in and around two of Iowa City’s grandest streets. The tour will feature classic Italianate, Queen Anne, Victorian, and Craftsman homes, historically recreated gardens, a historic commercial building, a wine tasting sponsored by John’s Grocery, and more. This year's tour will again coincide the opening of Plum Grove, the home of territorial governor Robert Lucas, and with the Lucas Farms History Days.

Admission:       $10 FHP Members; $15 Nonmembers. Purchase tickets online, at the Salvage Barn, or at homes on the tour.
